Korean Skincare Routine Order

Korean skincare routine order — products arranged by layering sequence

The correct Korean skincare routine order follows one rule: apply products from thinnest texture to thickest. Morning: oil cleanser → water cleanser → toner → essence → serum → eye cream → moisturiser → SPF. Evening replaces SPF with retinoids and sleeping masks. Not every step is required — a 4-step routine using this order works just as well as a full 10-step one.

TL;DR — Quick Summary

  • ✦The golden rule: thinnest product first, thickest last — this ensures each layer absorbs correctly.
  • ✦Morning routine ends with SPF — always the final step, applied after moisturiser.
  • ✦Evening routine adds retinoids (PM only) and optionally a sleeping mask 2–3 nights per week.
  • ✦Double cleansing (oil then water) is the Korean skincare foundation — it removes SPF completely before treatment steps.
  • ✦You do not need all 10 steps — choose steps that address your specific skin concerns.

Morning routine order

The layering rule explained

Korean skincare builds hydration in layers rather than relying on a single heavy product. The sequence works because each product layer is formulated to absorb at a specific depth — watery toners penetrate the outer layer of the stratum corneum, essences work slightly deeper, and moisturisers form a seal over the top to prevent transepidermal water loss.

If you apply a heavy cream first, it creates a barrier that prevents thinner products from reaching the skin. This is why texture order matters: watery → lotion → gel → serum → oil → cream. The thicker the product, the later in the routine it goes.
